OS 10.4 - Help: weird black boxes

Hello. I'm having a problem. Recently black boxes have been showing up in my OS. It seems that they are being drawn around the most active part in the current application. I've attached a couple screenshots. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks,

Sorry about that, apparently this problem has been discussed many times. I should have done a forum search before I posted, but I'd already done a Google search with no relevant results so I assumed it wasn't a very prevalent problem; sometimes Google's scope is just too big.
