OS 10.5 - How can I stop Spitlight from indexing backuup drives

How can I stop Spotlight from indexing backup drives. A friend has 3 volumes on an external drive, and it indexes all of them when she starts her Mac.

That might not be a good idea. What if you deleted a file from your hard drive? Spotlight would still find it on your backup.
