I've seen a lot of threads posted asking how to recover deleted files. Most responses are simply: "cannot be done". I'm not actually trying to recover any lost files, I'm simply wondering how OS X handles the file deletion process which makes it very difficult. A description or link would be great. Thanks.

If you've just done a normal "Empty Trash," then you might be able to recover the file using a program like Tech Tool.

If you've done a "Secure Empty Trash," then the file has been overwritten several times with nonsense data. Read the Help file for more information.
