OS 10.4 - Help Please!

Yesterday my mac book ran out of battery. I then put it on charge only to find out that all of my documents had gone and all of my system preferances had been restored to the factory settings. I have a couple of questions:

1) Is there any way to get my documents back?

2) Why did this hapen because with my stuff being stored on the hard drive it shouldnt have got erased?

3) If this is a poblem how can I get it fixed?

Also I am compitent on a windows computer but I am relativly new to mac just to let you no!

In your process of working, did you change the name of your home folder?

I turned file vault on and then off again if that helps.
