The CD drive on my G4 powermac keeps ejecting every time I start it up. It loads into OS X 10.3 fine but the thing keeps ejecting for some reason.

any fixes to this? I can't seem to find why it wants to eject the cd tray every time I start up the powermac

Could you give us a complete rundown of your Mac model, the OS version it is using (number please, not OS X Tiger for example), RAM, etc.

And are you attempting a reinstall? Is that when this is happening?

When did this start happening? After a software update? A new software install? Did you add a new peripheral to your Mac?

Does this happen for every CD/DVD you put in the optical drive?

What have you done so far on your own to troubleshoot?

Yupp.

Powermac G4 dual 533MHz
1GB RAM

OS X 10.3.9

I have no clue as to why it may even be happening. I re-installed OS X 10.3 about a few months ago. It was fine for the longest time, until just recently. I haven't changed any of my options or booting options. It still recognizes my HD as the start up disk. Nothing on the keyboard is being pressed. It just seems to do it. Once in a blue moon it decides not to eject the drive on start up. Nothing is even in the cd drive when it does this.

edit: The only new thing I have done is add a ps2 to USB converter to use my ps2 keyboard on the powermac.

would this be a software or hardware issue?

Does it eject even when no disc is in the drive?

Yes. When I turn it on the screen is grey, it ejects then the apple logo comes up and loads OS X. My startup preference does not even include the cd though. Would it be looking for something on the cd even though it is not set to do that?

That is sort of what I am wondering. Next time you boot, put the OS DVD in the drive. When it is done go to SYSTEM PREFS > STARTUP DISC and select the internal hard drive as the startup device. Then eject the OS DVD and restart the computer. Let us know what happens.

Could you launch from the Utilities folder Disk Utility and run Repair Disk Permissions by selecting your internal hard drive on the left sidebar? See if that will help.

And if after the restart the problem still persists, unplug that ps2 keyboard and use the Apple keyboard that shipped with your Mac just to see if it wouldn't be a conflict with the new hardware.
