OS 10.4 - Software updates?

Just a quick question, when for instance a software update is downloaded for say itunes or OSX etc does the old version automatically deletes itself or does it have to be deleted manually?

In general, yes. Very specifically, I believe the new update simply overwrites the old version, but the effect is the same.
