OS 10.4 - Sending messages between Macs w/o IM?

Is there a way I can send messages between Macs on my local network without using IM??

iChat has Rendezvous. It looks up everyone who has it running on their Mac on your network. Maybe that would work?

There is a command line application called "talk".
