I am running 10.3.9 and for the past few months I haven't been able to install anything I download via internet. My Stuffit expander opens and states "Error #17530 An error occurred attempting to expand 'Install ABC.pkg'. A folder was specified when a file was required.". I am stumped it used to install just fine before. What could I have done to lock folders or mess up the expanders preferences?

I have serached the web and forum after forum I have seen this questioned posted and never answered. I have all my app's just fine and could install stuff a few months ago...never updated anything or change any of my settings. So I am begging the masters to help a rookie save his Mac.

TIA

Google brought plenty of hits for Stuffit Expander error 17530 and some of the people having this problem is because the install.app is missing from their hard drive. Could you check your internal hard drive to see if you can find this program?

And while you're at it, launch DiskUtility, from the Utilities folder, and repair disk permissions. Panther was getting messed up permissions easily somehow.

You are right...I never trashed this file. How can I gt it back? I also ran the DiskUtility and yup permissions where all changed after the program ran each step. I still don't have that install.app in my HDD?

Thank you for the quick answer and help too

I have a installer (looks like the Harddrive) in the utility folder, but no install.app. I have reinstalled my OS via discs and still nothing. Please help what am I missing?

Well normally a reinstall would have put the Installer.app (not Install.app, sorry) on your hard drive and it should be located in your Utilities folder. Can you check there? If it is there, you ought to be good to go.

It is quite possible that the newest FREE version of Stuffit is required.

Another problem is that the extension may be missing off the name and it is trying to unstuff / unzip with the wrong program. I would get the free Stuffit first and go from there.

Good call, Chilbear. The OP didn't offer the Stuffit version he uses and I didn't think to ask.

How did you know what version of stuffit I have installed on my Mac? Sould I have the newest verison and my OS is out dated and can't support it?

Could it have to do with the missing name and it doesn't know what to do with it(like Chilbear said). Please help I am thinking about blowing 200 bucks and upping the ram and CD rom to a DVD burner. If I can't fix this I might as well trash it.....and I love my Mac. What should I look? I have the app in the folder?

Well when you downloaded Stuffit Expander, did you look at the requirements? That would tell you if it'll work on your 10.3.9 Mac.

Again, did you repair disk permissions? A frequent problem with Mac OS X Panther 10.3.x was that the disk permissions got messed up somehow and would cause some weirdness. So go to your Utilities folder and launch DiskUtility and select your hard drive icon on the left and click on Repair disk permissions if you haven't already done so.

I have run the diskUtility over 5 times, each time it fixes things and states OK. So then I was thinking maybe I got the version that doesn't work with my OS. I deleted every file stuffit could be in (using Clean app) and rechecked it via finder. nothing was left with stuffit..but here is whats crazy I was able to DL Stuffit and open that DMG and install it (asked for root access) and it worked. Then everything after that I installed will not open and has Error all over again.

I have no idea whats happening here and I do thank you for taking the time to help me. I think the issue is with the stuffit...for instaling stuffit worked fine....I think I am going crazy here.

Thank you again for all your help and I will run the disk repair for the 6th time just because you said so and you have taken the time to help me greatly

Not the disk repair but Disk PERMISSIONS repair. Not the same thing. It fixes Unix file permissions.

Sorry thats it for thats the only option I can pick. Also it always seems to repair Previous System 1 and changes the numbers to a 43581 (just a guess not the real number it changes).

Previous System? Have you reinstalled before, using Archive and Install and haven't trashed the old system folder yet? That might be a problem.
