so, i've got a dual processor G4, and have been running OS 10.3.9 with absolutely NO problems, until i went to install OS 10.4.7 this morning.
i inserted the install disc and followed the command to restart to begin installation. when starting back up, there was a "kernel" message (?) overwriting the screen, but i couldn't read any of it because there was also a box telling me to restart the computer.

i've tried to restart now in EVERY way i can think of:
i've removed all my extra cards and devices, and tried to start-up from the CD, and the monitor just sits on a grey screen and won't respond.
i've tried to start-up normally, as well as in "Safe" mode, and it just flashes a grey screen for a moment and then screen goes black.

ANY IDEAS?
please help! i'm scared to death, as i didn't fully back-up before installing!

Welcome to Mac-Forums, blankenship.

What you experienced with the kernel message was a kernel panic.

What I would suggest you try first is reset the Cuda chip.

Another thing to try: you could startup in Open Firmware by holding down the Command (or Apple key) + Option + O + F: in the prompt line, type:

reset-nvram

then press the Return key

At the Open Firmware prompt, type:

reset-all

then press Return.

And you could also unplug from the electrical outlet your PowerMac G4 and let it wait for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. This helps drain the capacitors.

See where these take you and report back.
QUOTE Thanks
