How much RAM is good "enough" when running a 24" iMac doing general tasks like surfing the net, word processing, e-mails and photo editing. Maybe some HD video in the near future. I know you can never have enough RAM. But would OS X run smoothly with just 1GB? Or should I definitely get 2?

I ask because I'm running Windows Vista Premium on my laptop and we know Vista is a memory pig. It needs a minimum of 1GB to run satisfactorily. I have 2 GB.

Thanks.

Ive got a 20" (so shouldnt be much difference) it had 1gb RAM and ran fine -no slowness, I know this because I have Vista too, and know the slowness with 1gb it has

I, still in my Windows mind upgraded it to 2gb thinking it was needed, and saw no difference what so-ever and I do nothing more than what you described there except bootcamp a few games

1gbs fine!

From what he asked "would OS X run smoothly with just 1GB?" the answer is yes

Thanks for your posts. So, should I decide to get an iMac i might just start with 1GB.

As for Vista...I've found that my laptop performs fairly fast. No slowdowns. With 2GB.

Have a good week.

1GB is fine for everyday use.
I recently went from 1,25GB to 2GB and the difference is noticeable, but only when doing a lot of multitasking with RAM intensive apps.
