Hi all,
I have a Powermac G5 and am having some trouble with my internal hard drive (250gb). A while back I ran a Norton virus scan. Realising it was taking too long when I ha to go out I tried to cancel it but it froze up my computer. On restarting I found that about 60GB had disappeared. Wherever I look I cannot account for the missing space. Does anyone know what might have happened and how I can reclaim the space?? I tried using Treesize to show me what was taking up memory but it was still unaccounted for. Help if you can please!! Thanks. QKP |

To get to it if you have Tiger you can invoke spotlight with apple key+spacebar and start typin Disk Utility and select the Disk Utility program. If you don't have tiger open your applications folder, go to utilities, and then select Disk Utility inside that folder. Once you are in Disk Utility, you should try to do a repair permissions. This probably won't do much, but it doesn't hurt. Then if you are still having the problem insert your original Tiger or Panther disk and restart the computer. Hold down the 'c' key while it is restarting so you can boot from CD. Then when it boots up look at the top menu and select Disk Utility from one of the menus. It will bring up the same sort of application as before, but now it says "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" on the right. From here you want to Verify first. If something goes wrong, try a repair disk. If all of that fails, report back, and i'll try to help some more. Good luck. P.S. I have been having problems with my HD recently too. So if any of this is wrong anyone can correct me or offer alternative advice. |

I'm serious. It's crap. To find the missing space, you probably need to look at invisible files. Use OnyX or something similar to clear cache files and turn on "hidden files" in the Finder. See if there is one Norton left behind that is the right size. BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU DELETE! Probably wouldn't hurt to repair the disk and the permissions as said above too. Craig in Texas ---You did WHAT!? Close the Terminal and step away slowly. |
