Hi,
How do you know whether to install something in /usr/local or /Library? I installed Apache2 and php5, and they installed in /Library. I installed mysql and it went into /usr/local. Now, I want to install tomcat, and I've seen some instructions that say to install tomcat in /Library and others that say to install tomcat in /usr/local. |

I got some advice that said it is much easier to edit and move files around when you can see them in Finder like with php5 and apache2 installed in /Library. With mysql, you can't edit the files directly anyway, so you don't need to see any of the files related to mysql, and therefore /usr/local is fine for mysql.
I went ahead and installed tomcat in /Library because servlet apps have large directory structures, and I thought it would be helpful to see them in Finder. Last edited by 7stud; 07-20-2007 at 08:34 PM. |
