Data transfer limits?

Everytime I try to transfer data from one external hard drive to the other I can't. After about 4-5 gigs transfer I get an error code 1309 (file size too big). Is there anyway to expand the limit or am I just stuck?

Is the 4 or 5 Gb a bunch of smaller files or is one or two big ones?
