OS 10.4 - Forced Restart

I was just looking at pictures on my MacBook when all of a sudden my computer freezes and forces me to restart by holding down the power button.

I then restart and get this error message.............

Im sorry but I dont know a whole lot about the technical side of Apples as Im a bit of a newb.

Any help as to why this happened and what to do to avoid in the future would be great.
