Utility for checking Net connection speed?
Is there a utility or widget available for checking the upload and download speeds on a Internet connection through the Ethernet port? (I assume that there is nothing in OS-X itself--haven't gotten my Macbook, which is on order.)

I use this link. Look under favorites.

I do the download test all the time successfully.
I have noticed that Upload Test is not always successful.
You can also ask your DSL or Wireless Service provider to give you their Internet link for you to do the test anytime.

    BTW cramer,
Your wire can hinder your speed! Don't go cheap. Get decent ethernet cabling.
