I lost my install disks for my MacBook that I bought in June '06, so I tried to use my friend's from a MacBook she bought a week ago. I got the message "This software cannot be installed on this computer". The install disks should work right? Did they change something between MacBooks?

Thanks,

Kevin

If you guys have the same type of Macbook, then technically yes, you should.

Now you must be thinking, a Macbook is a Macbook, right? Well, it's possible that the install discs won't work between CoreDuo and Core2Duo Macbooks. I'm not 100% sure, this is just a guess. Someone else may be able to shed some more light on the situation.

The restore/install media that comes with a new Mac is intended to work with only that particular model and version release.
In the past, it was sometimes possible to use any disc with another system, as long as it matched up (eg: PowerBook disc with newer PowerBook).
This has changed. You simply need to use the disc that was intended for the exact machine type you have. If you don't, then you run the chance of it not working at all.

Out of curiousity, why did you need the install discs? You should almost never need to reinstall the OS, as many things are corrected without going through the trouble of a reinstall.
