...I am often too lazy to scroll up and down using my mouse, so I use the up and down arrows on my keyboard.

Is it possible to open an application using a key on the keyboard rather than having to click it using the mouse? When I press Enter on the application I want to open, it just thinks I want to edit the name of the application and makes itself ready to be edited...

Sounds like you should try out Quicksilver. Its a hot key application launcher. hit your hot key, then type 2 or 3 letters from the apps name, and hit enter.

Currently running OS X 10.10

I agree... if you are not already using it you should check it out. I rarely even go into my apps folder.. If I need something I just reveal Quicksilver.

Here is a post with a bit of info on it.

You can also hit command + down arrow just as you would if you were opening a folder. Since you are already using the arrow to scroll through the apps, this would require the least amount of effort, and that sounds like what you are going for

Yea, once you get used to Quicksilver, you'l never know why you went so long without it. I use it to open iTunes and Play/Pause it whenever I need it. I also use it to open up applications all the time if they aren't on my dock!
