Updates and 10.2.5

Since installing 10.2.5 I've been unable to install updates like to Toast, Acrobat Reader etc. System Hangs (Coloured ball) and when i reboot with restart OS not recognised Mac Smiley question mark. Have to switch off. Is it my HDD.
