What is your internet configuration?

Router?
DHCP?
DSL / Cable?

If there is no router It should be present in your network settings. If there is a router it still should be present.

Goto www.ipchicken.com >this web page will give you your Internet IP.

Then in terminal run this command.

traceroute your.internet.ip

eg traceroute 71.56.88.245

The first hop will most likely be your gateway.

Is everything working OK and you just want to know what your default gateway is, or are you not yet connected to the internet and are trying to figure this out?

In general, most ISPs hook you up using dynamic IP and gateway addresses, auto assigned by DHCP. You shouldn't need to worry about this. The exception is if you have static IP addresses. In this case, you will need your ISP to tell you what your default gateway is.

If all is well and you just want to know what your default gateway is, go to System Preferences, Network, and select Built In Ethernet 1 (or whatever corresponds to your physical connection) from the Show: selection list. Your default gateway shows up under "Router". In a normal DSL and DHCP setup, this will the local IP address of your DSL router, usually 192.168.1.1.

My Macs: PowerMac G5 Quad, 2.5 GHz, 4 Core, Mac Pro, 3.2 GHz 8 Core, Power Macintosh 7500/100
My iStuff: 32 GB iPhone 4, 30 GB iPod Video, 16 GB iPod Touch
My OS': Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Leopard, Mac OS 8.6, openSUSE 10.3, Win XP
