Mac Specs: 27" iMac 2.7GHz Core i5, iPhone 4S, 3rd gen iPad

Ok, so when I'm using the MBP LCD I have one background, then when I use dual-screen it changes to another, and then when I close the screen and use external monitor only it changed to yet another!!! How can I reign in this madness?
