I just downloaded google earth and ended up with an icon on my desktop and a blue world that I had to put in the dock. Can't put the other icon in the trash because it says "eject" when I try. I like things neat and I don't need the extra icon. The same thing happened when I loaded iwork. I have the pages and keynote on my desktop and also in the dock. How do I clean things up?

btw, google earth didn't go into applications but I put it in there later.

the one on your desktop that says eject is the dmg image drag it to the trash and let it eject and it will go away. normally when you open a dmg you will have to drag the contents into the applications folder. then eject the image and youll be all set.

the install process is pretty easy, but confusing for switchers sometimes.

Yeah to describe it succinctly, a .dmg is a drag and drop installer i.e. you don't go through a regular software installer.

oh, and if you ever want to uninstall it, that process is much easier than windows also, but so much so that it may seem confusing.

check this thread for uninstall info.

installing/uninstalling apps seems to be one of the tricker things for switchers to get a handle on. luckily it's only because windows had us jumping through hoops and letting programs get their claws so deep in the system that mac's process for this is so different (and simple) by comparison.

Remember that putting things in the dock doesn't install anything. The dock is just a shortcut bar - programs need to go in 'Applications' and you can drag icons into the dock after they've installed.
