How can I set my modem to not timeout and disconnect?
Also, why does the modem sometimes connect and then immediately disconnect?

The modem can be set to disconnect automatically (in the event that you can actually keep a steady connection!) under System Preferences --> Network --> Modem --> PPP Options.

Are you stuck with dial up? I have seen dial ups fail to hold a connection to the point of driving a person crazy. What are you going to do when you need to install the next 42 meg operating system upgrade?!

Modems are not as bad as you make out. Remember, ten years ago or so, that was all we had, and they worked pretty well, and were fairly stable.

I agree about the OS upgrade (or ANY program upgrade in fact!). Today's computer environment defintely discriminates against folks on slow links. There is an almost implicit assumption that you are sitting at the other end of at least a 1 Mbps+ DSL link these days.

With Verizon now stringing 42 Mbps FIOS in my neighborhood, even DSL may seem slow soon!

Things have changed so much in ten years. When I first got Windows ME on my then new HP 9800 PC, I was aghast at the fact that the \Windows directory occupied a little over a 1 GB of disk space. What a waste of space, I thought! Fast forward to today and Windows Vista will require 1 GB of RAM space just to execute!!! WHO knows how much disk space it needs. I can't help asking if this is really progress! :-)

My Macs: PowerMac G5 Quad, 2.5 GHz, 4 Core, Mac Pro, 3.2 GHz 8 Core, Power Macintosh 7500/100
My iStuff: 32 GB iPhone 4, 30 GB iPod Video, 16 GB iPod Touch
My OS': Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Leopard, Mac OS 8.6, openSUSE 10.3, Win XP

Fastest computer I ever had was a IIci running System 6.0.4 with 16 megs of ram on a 20 meg hard drive. It would boot in seconds!
