OK, through Candybar, I accidentally (rather, stupidly) saved over the system default icons with some custom ones, and am looking to restore them.
What I'm wondering is this;
if I use the 'Intall mac OS and Bundled Software' installer on my macbook, will this do a clean restore (thus, hopefully restoring all the icons...) without affecting any data on the HD? As I understand it, it should only affect apple apps and system (which I would then update again later?). I'm pretty sure I won't lose anything by this method, I just want to have it confirmed. I've never had to use anything like this before, so I'm just a little hesitant.
I found a file on the internet which contains some of the default icons, but not all. So, does anybody know if this installer on the install CD will safely restore the icons?
Try doing a 'Get Info' on the icons and click on the icon in the top left of the box to highlight it and press delete. Should return the default icon.
yeah, I know about that - the thing is, Candybar saved over them. So all the default icons I changed are permanently lost. Hitting 'restore icons' in Candybar does nothing because it thinks they are the defaults.
I've managed to rescue some, but the others are ones I can't be bothered manually searching for (such as the list icons that appear in folder windows (applications, documents, movies, music etc.)) I've been able to restore others through Candybar (from this file I downloaded containing icons).
I just need something that will restore them all safely - which is why I'm turning to the installer hoping it will do that for me.
I've scoured the web and couldn't find an answer about reclaiming your system icons.
So it seems you're going to have to try the installer method. I read that you have a choice in what you re-install. So it doesn't look like you're going to lose any personal data.
It's a good idea to back up your data just in case.
Now, I do not have any first hand experience with your situation but on Apples website they do go into detail about what you are wanting to do.
excellent, thanks for that
I found a similar doc on the apple site, but it wasn't as clear as that. I'll be sure to backup what I can. Thankful I have both an iPod and external HD.
I'll see what a few others say, but I think that's the go at the moment.

Thanks for you help mate!
I'd really like to know how it all goes with things. It's strange that CandyBar won't let you restore the defaults...

well, it came up with an error message with something about the default icons. I stupidly dismissed the message and hit OK (which was the highlighted option - usually these are the 'correct' option to hit)
Doing that, replaced the default set with my customised icons, making them the default.
I've got my fingers crossed this will sort out the problem. I'll check to see if others have any additional advice tomorrow, otherwise I'll do a quick backup and try the installer in hopes it will work. Thanks again for all your help
Hey dtownley1... i have the same problem... somehow the volume icon under the volumes tab in Candybar shows a custom icon and not my default, i have not had any luck fixing it...Have you ?
i will hate to reinstall everything back again...
