How can I add additional shortcuts to apps in the Apple menu?

I'm stuck with this one....not on how to do it (I am actually unaware how to do it at the mo') but with the benefits from doing it. (if its possible)

You could have the shortcuts on your Dock and then set the Dock to hide.
