OS 10.4 - Audio panning randomly switches around! ARRGGHH!

The panning in System Preferencs often gets randomly switched on my Powerbook G4 12". It usually happens after the laptop goes to sleep(including having the lid shut), but not always. Seems pretty random to me. Any way to get it to stop? It's incredibly annoying to turn on some music, and have the levels all mixed up, especially if it's in very hardcore stereo and the vocals are lacking or something.

Thanks!
