Hi,
I'm using my brother's Mac (because my PC failed) and I need to copy some files from one external hard drive to another. They both came up on the screen OK, but when I tried to copy the files over, I got a message saying: "The item could not be moved because "New Volume" cannot be modified." When I go to 'Get Info', it says 'You can only read' under 'Ownership & Permissions'. I tried starting up with just the empty external hard drive attaced and the same thing happened. Please can someone tell me how to change this, so that I can copy stuff to my external drive? Thanks, Joe |

In the get info window expand the details of the permissions. Owner is most likely system, but group should be admin. If group is admin then your brother should be the one to fix your permissions issue because you apparently are not an admin user. If group is not admin then use the repair permisions button in disk utility application. Or have your brother do it.
If you aren't an admin user you won't be able to do anything without admin credentials. |
