After playing around with the alt,cmd and shift key to access all the alternate characters on a keyboard for a project, I am now stuck with pages that are all characters with a box round that describes what is inside the box. I have reset browser and keyboard settings. No luck. Please help

Please find a link to the image that explains the situation better.

Messing around with all of those modifier keys...maybe a preference setting got triggered/changed. I would try an NVRAM/PRAM reset:

Ok...if you tried anything else...please tell us.

Maybe try this. Go to:

- Apple Menu
- System Preferences
- Keyboard
- Keyboard Shortcuts tab
- Restore Defaults button

Give this a try...maybe it will help.

- What sort of computer are we talking about (desktop, laptop)?
- What OS version are we talking?
- Are you using any sort of plug in USB keyboard? I found a couple internet threads where folks using an external NON-APPLE keyboard having this problem.

Try Force Quitting and then an SMC reset:-

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
