My macbook pro is restarting itself randomly - most of the time when I'm browsing in Safari it seems. I'm running 10.9.2 and have an external monitor connected as well as a MOTU firewire audio box. Below is the error message I get after it restarts - can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance!

Kernel panics are usually hardware related. The first thing to try is remove the MOTU audio box and run for awhile that way to see if your MacBook Pro goes into panic again. Let us know - and if it does panic again we can try something else.

Thank you very much - will try with the MOTU box disconnected and let you know results. Appreciate the help very much.

I am experiencing a similar problem and getting the following problem report. I am using a OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3 on a MBP.

This has happened several times over the past few months. I am using Firefox, the screen goes blank and the system restarts on its own.

I have run diagnostics, which indicates no problem. I am using Norton anti virus.

Any idea of next steps or what is going on?

I can tell you it's going to be hard to pin this one down if it's only happened several times over the past few months. Kernel panics are generally caused by a hardware fault but I see nothing in the KP report that would lead me to believe that some hardware is misbehaving.

You're running a nvidia GPU in your MacBook Pro which have been troublesome in some models. Whether that's the cause or not, it's hard to say.

Kernel panics can also be caused by certain software and how it interacts with other software. NAV is something I personally would not run on any of my Macs. Windows machines yes, Macs no. Running Norton is a personal choice but since there are no active viruses in the wild which can infect your Mac, you might want to think about that. There is malware, but Norton is not going to spot that anyway.

Many thanks for your quick response! I appreciate it.

Your comments about Norton make sense. It has crossed my mind that Norton is causing the issue. Norton's product caused me tremendous issues last year, which I thought had been fixed.

There is no reason to run any antivirus at all on a Mac, and in particular one should avoid all Symantec products.

Thanks for your response. Why is that so? I have heard different arguments on having anti-virus on a Mac. Symantec on many occasions has picked up an attack.

The only viruses Norton, or any other AV, can find are Windows viruses in your emails or in documents you got from someone running Windows. There are no viruses for OS X and no known vectors by which one could be written. That may change, but when it does, the AV developers will have to write software to look at that vulnerable vector once it's identified. For now, AV is a waste of time and money for OS X.

Thanks everyone for your input! Okay... so 24 hours later it happened again. Like yesterday, I am using Firefox when I get an unrequested restart. Today's crash report is as follows - does anyone see anything new, or does the report tell you anything more than the previous?

Get rid of everything Symantec. I don't know if that will fix it,but you don't need it and it very well could be the problem.

Jake - Okay... I am going to try that.

Just wondering, I am going through the Symantec logs on my MBP. I see that there are numerous indicators that a virus was stopped. Last one is: Trojan.Webkit!html found in: /Users/1/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/zyr0i7hw.default/Cache/A/

What is this it found and why am I fine if I do not have AV?

Thanks Again!

As I said earlier, all it finds are Windows viruses. It looks like some website you visited had a Trojan for Windows in it or in an ad there.

Jake, I am taking your advice. Does the AV need to be completely removed or is turning is off enough to see if there is a difference?

Thanks,

I would remove it completely. It embeds so deeply in the OS that it's hard to turn it "off" with any success, and removal is also a challenge. Look to see if they have an uninstaller, or look on their website for removal instructions.
