Hi everyone.
I have a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.5.8, and there is a 8.3 GB size file named -C in the root of the Macintosh. It is a plain text type file and I don't know when it was created. I am trying get some free space in the disk, but I am afraid of deleting it, as I don't know if it has something to do with the system or any app.
Have anyone of you found this kind of file in your Macintosh HD, or does anyone know what is this file and if it is safe to delete it?
Thank you very much.

If it's a plain text file, view it to see what it contains. Highlight the file and press your space bar. It's very likely something you can remove but you should check to see what it contains first.

Thank you very much for your reply, chscag.

I tried to open the file to find out what it contained before posting, but I couldn't do it.

The Finder gives me 3 options to choose an app to open the file with:

1. Archive Utility: A window pops up and starts "unarchiving the file. When the progress bar reaches the end, an error message appears in this window: "Unable to unarchive -C into Macintosh HD. (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.)".

2. Console: It just shows the last 16 MB of the total 8.3 GB. These are the last lines:

3. TextEdit: A window pops up saying: "The document "-C" could not be opened. The file is too large".

I think I will delete it crossing my fingers...

Yeah, go ahead and delete it but don't empty the Trash until you run for awhile to make sure everything is working OK.
