Which iMac do you have - year and model? Version of OS X it's running? And tell us which keyboard you have.

    Specs:
Imac 27", 3.3GHz, 512 flash storage, 16GB memory, macOS Sierra.
Go into Disk Utility and try running Repair Permissions, and if no better turn off, remove plug from mains and let it stand before booting with nothing attached. Then connect keyboard and mouse and see how you go.

Next advise is to buy another keyboard. G5's are getting long in the tooth.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Time for another keyboard. They do fail and yours is old alas.
