I reformatted my mac because I had some hardware issues... the first time I did it wrong and it just upgraded or something... Since then I had no more startup noise which I love so much. So I did an erase and install reformat hoping to get my startup sound back and it still doesnt play when I turn the computer on. I loved it so much and I don't know how to get it back. The computer is not muted either when I turn it off or restart it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Actually I have the opposite problem. The sounds works through the speakers, even when I have headphones in. And I want it to go through the headphones when I have them in. So I muted the sound with "Startup Sound". Well that's what the system preference for it's called. And it's icon is a whistle.

And to fin your problem, can you do a hard drive search to find the actual sound file. Maybe it's moved, or not there.

There is a program called 'Mac Pilot' that allows you to disable to sound,
use this to make sure its enabled...

No sound is generally bad news - check the apple support forums.
