Can't get My Passport external drive to work with my Imac

I am running Mac OX 10.7.5 and just bought a My Passport external drive which does not seem to install. When I right click to get info it says:
Format Windows NTFS
Is there a way to format it so my Mac can "see" the drive and I can use it?
Many many thanks!

Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).

G'day and welcome to the forums.
Hook up the external, go into Disk utility, select the external and go into Erase in Disk Utility and format Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Go into Partition and under Options check GUID is selected.Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
