I was recently given an older Mac mini, system specs as follows:
2 gb ram
1.83 hz processor
80 gb hd
It was made in 2007.

The problem is the finder keeps crashing. The window is open for 15-60 sec (depending on what I'm doing) then it disappears. The desktop icons disappear also, but not open applications. I ran a safe boot and its fine, but when I log in normally it does it.
I'm hoping someone can help me, I have tried everything I could find on the blogs to no avail. Thank you in advance.
Here is the crash log:

Try deleting the Finder preference file

Look in your home folder / Library / Preferences / com.apple.finder.plist

Log out and back in

Am "assuming" you did not get the Snow Leopard disc with the machine?
Would suggest you go ahead and invest $20 to buy it from Apple - link.

(don't know how often it's crashing on you - let us know if you can't do that - or try it from safe mode)

I deleted the finder preference file, no change. Finder resets itself every 15 - 60 seconds depending on what I'm doing. It doesn't crash in safe mode. I'm not sure what is going on.

What I think that you're experiencing is called a kernel panic. Many times kernel panics are due to hardware issues...and many times the most common hardware issue is the ram.

Since you were given this Mac-Mini...you may not know much about its history. So the ram would be the first place I would investigate.

It probably has 2 sticks of ram in it currently...so you could remove 1 stick...and see if it is stable with that one stick. If it keeps doing the same thing...then just run the other stick by itself. If both sticks of ram (each run by itself) still cause the computer to crash...then maybe someone installed the wrong ram into the computer (it does happen).

This would require you to purchase some new/correct ram...install the new ram...and see if that solves the problem.

One other thing I should mention. The older Mac-Mini's can be a bit difficult to open up. So if you are not familiar with how to remove/install the ram in your Mac-Mini...check out the procedure at:

Try creating a new user account and log into that to see if it occurs there.

Created a new user account this morning, Finder is still resetting itself. Could it be a hardware issue? The correct type of ram is installed I don't think that's the problem.

You can try doing a Repair Permissions from Disk Utility - don't think that will do it though.

The other thing to try would be a Disk Repair - but you need the 10.6 disc to boot from to do it.

Wouldn't hurt trying 1 stick of RAM at a time as suggested by Nick either.

It could be the correct type of ram but still have a module that is going bad. I had a G5 once with memory modules that passed the Apple hardware test but caused panics regularly. If you could get running long enough to do the installation Memtest is pretty thorough. testing option. I believe it can still be run in single user mode which allows testing for virtually all of the memory.

It never hurts to try the ram suggestions I mentioned. As soon as you start assuming that one thing or another is not the problem...the more confusing a situation becomes.

It's not just about the ram being correct or not...it's also about ram going bad...and ram becoming loose/unseated.

Have to agree Nick. When I had the memory problems with the G5 I went through weeks of frustration regular kernel panics. After weeks of vacation where I was unable to do any testing I ran memtest and one of the modules failed within the first two minutes. Replacing the ram fixed the problem.

I had initially assumed that the ram was good because this was literally a new machine and it had passed the Apple Hardware Test. Apparently the memtest results were more thorough and ultimately more accurate.

I think that I remember mentioning something like you experienced in a thread yesterday...where basically I was saying that all hardware testing programs are "not created equal".

How many hardware testing programs can scan a computer...report that nothing is wrong from a hardware perspective...yet there still are hardware issues. I remember having a MacBook Pro with a video problem...and a very strange display brightness problem.

Scanned the computer with a variety of testing applications...and they kept reporting everything was fine. I even took the same exact computer to the Apple Store...I totally demoed the problem (and was easily able to recreate the problem in front of the "Apple Genius").

They booted the computer with one of their testing hard drives (to eliminate my HD as the source of the problem)...AND they scanned it with what you would think would be the best hardware testing software available...and they still couldn't pinpoint the issue.

They sent me home with no resolution(s)!

Whatta ya gonna do??

A while back I was researching an article for About This Particular Mac once and started to wonder why one drive utility was showing a drive's S.M.A.R.T status as failing (ok on some runs not on others) while Disk Utility reported the status as verified.

A few days later Disk Utility also reported the status as failing. I started to wonder why one utility caught the problem earlier than the other. It seems that not all S.M.A.R.T attributes are tested by all utilities. The failure threshold may not be the same for all utilities as well.

Just noticed something that may or may not be significant, when the finder resets it automatically opens the system preferences window. Not sure if that means anything or not.

Ok, I took the ram out and tested them individually as instructed, the same thing happened each time. BUT I noticed that when Finder "blinks" System Preferences always opens. Sometimes the window is visible, sometimes not. I'm wondering if it has something to do with that. I'm not sure if Finder is triggering the blink or if System Preferences is triggering the blink. I tried to Force quit sys prefs, and around 1 min later the blink happens again and the sys prefs icon on the dock bounces. Any ideas?
