OS X 10.8.4 is Mountain Lion not Lion. When you reinstalled Mountain Lion based on Apple's advice, did you do a clean install or just over the top of the current install? If you're able to connect to the web using Safari and Firefox, then your connection is OK. It may be that the App Store application and possibly iTunes is corrupt if neither will load. You may have to reinstall again but this time do a clean install. If you go that route, make a backup first. Use Time Machine.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

You do have an Apple ID, password and credit card details for the App Store account?

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
