Hello dear

I have an imac that i would like to update (upgrade) the OS; still have the system since i bought it. yes, the curren OS 10.5.8.
Please and Kindly, do i have to download the OS from apple store or can i get it on cd?
and what i do no really know is this; Up to which version would i be able to Update the OS.?
I just remember that i would have to go to the next version, and then from there i could get to the next. The thing is, here this imac is really about 5 years old.

You can first update Leopard to Snow Leopard (10.6.X). The Snow Leopard disk can be purchased from Apple for $19.99. After installing Snow Leopard, you'll have access to the Mac App store where you can purchase Mountain Lion if your iMac qualifies.

Here is the LINK to purchase Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion is only available as a download - no disk.

Before outlaying your hard earned, make sure the iMac is in fact an Intel model. Hit the little Apple icon top left corner, select About this Mac and see what it says about the processor. Time does get away on us and about five years could be out a year or two.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I purchased my Mini in December of 2007, which makes it about 5-1/2 years old. It also came with Leopard. It wasn't long after that when Apple released Snow Leopard. I've determined that my Mini will not run Mountain Lion, but that iMac might. You'll have to provide more information about your processor for anyone here to tell you.
