For the first time, I'm trying to clone my HD to an SSD. I go into the recovery system and get the ball rolling then I get an error message telling me that there is an input/output problem.

Does anyone have knowledge of this?

Thanks much!

First... cloning a spindle drive to a SSD is NOT recommended. The recommended method it to make a backup using Time Machine, clean install to the SSD, and then recover your data with Time Machine.

The input - output error (i/o) could be because of defects in the spindle drive or you have corrupt data. Another reason not to clone to the SSD.

I've seen several videos and tutorials online on how to do this. Why would it matter what drive it's coming from as long as the information is there?

I'm not really sure how to use the time machine. Are there any specific instructions on how to do this?

Thanks!

G'day and welcome to the forums.

As chscag suggests that is not the way to go. OWC technicians advise cloning is one way to transfer problems. Best option is to format the drive Mac OS Extended, clean install OS X and then run Migration Assistant to transfer things over.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

How can I clean install from my mac to my SSD externally, via usb?

I appreciate the info as I am not a nube, but not well versed in advanced Mac tech.

Thanks
