My iMac has been running very slowly & today a dark "shade" came down and Fire fox crashed. Then a multi-language message window came up on the screen stating "restart the computer" but, when I do, it just goes black & same "restart" message comes up.

Start your iMac in Safe Boot mode and copy the last kernel panic log to your next post to let us have a look at what it says. To start in safe mode:

Press and hold your Shift key as soon as you hear the startup sound. Hold it until the Apple appears. Safe mode disables all third party drivers, startup apps and the system sound. It also does a verify on your hard drive.

I started "test" & the sent the report from panic log to Apple. I tried to copy to include with this but could not. Can you get to that reply?
I then selected start iMac and opened Safari & am replying from the iMac. Will see what happens when I try to go to normal ops now.

I ran verification on HD & it was reported error free.

When you next have a kernel panic go into Console and copy the log here. Generally KPs are hardware related. Any new memory or hardware? In case it may be software, using MacKeeper or any antivirus software by chance?

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I am not the expert I was once on this, but it looks to me like an issue with the video card.

A correction /addition to my original complaint / cry for help: For some reason I did not remember earlier that an Adobe Flash Player "down-load required" alert box came up & the download had begun just before the dark screen came down. It appeared authentic and I thought nothing of it then but that may have been a malware download.... Hope it's been a nice weekend for you all!

chas_m,
No one has responded to my posts so I reviewed the 2 I got & read your advise, Excellent & I am sure I should have been running some maintenance & virus software but have never had any problems with any Macs I've had. But, I have something amiss.
I am responding to your response via the iMac in "Safe Mode" & video is perfect. Everything works fine as long as I stick with the Mac software. But, as soon as I try to restart normally, the grey curtain drops & restart is ordered.
I live in S. Carolina hours away from an Apple store or repair shop for Apples. So, would appreciate any advise on fixing this fine iMac.
Thanks, Jim

If your iMac is operating OK in safe mode then that means the video is working correctly. And it's not likely to be a hardware problem. Also, I don't believe you have malware. The Adobe Flash update should be OK.

Take a look at your startup apps to see what might be running when you're in normal mode. Here's how:

1. System Preferences - Users & Groups (or Accounts), click on the "Login Items" tab. That will show what apps are running on startup. You can remove them by pressing the minus button below after highlighting them. (You first must open the small lock with your admin password.)

2. Open the Finder. Navigate your way here:

Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems/

Macintosh HD/System/Library/StartupItems/

If there are any apps in the above two folders, don't delete them. Let us know what they are first.

Response to Harry: No antivirus s/w at all. I will when I get this one back operational.
I will now try to restart in Normal Mode to check on apps running in background---has not started in normal mode so for days, so don't have much hope. But, will report back.

chscag,
The iMac did start up with a "restart" from the Safe mode & I checked Systems Preferences /Users& Groups and it shows that I am active and "Guest User" is "Sharing Only" --I have no idea who/what that is or could be.
Under Log-in items I found 2 apps checked to run on log-in: Eye-TV (I used that years ago & so deleted it & "DevDetectListener" which I do not know anything about so left it alone.
I then tried to navigate in the Finder to find the Library or Start- up Items & could not navigate to either. So, I checked the "Activity Monitor" & found one possible problem: it showed the "X11" app had been modified at about the time the iMac crashed (10 Apr, 3:38PM). It has 5.4MB but I could not tell anything else about it. I am writing this still in normal mode but the windows started fragmenting and it is really unusable now, So, will post this for your analysis. Sorry I could not figure out how to dig deeper into the OS. BTW what anti-virus and other maintenance programs do you recommend for iMacs, Powerbooks & iPads?
Thanks! Jim

You can remove the "DevDetectListener" as that should not impact anything you're running.

The X11 app is used to run certain programs and will not be active until the program is called up. (WINE uses X11 to run some Windows programs.)

You don't need to run an Anti-Virus program and the only maintenance program we recommend is OnyX which you can download from here. Make sure you download the correct version for your version of OS X.

I don't know of anything for the iPad and really don't think you need anything for it anyway.

CHSCAG, Thank you for your expert advise. I downloaded (& contributed) OnyXX & ran all the tools in it and my iMac now runs OK--most of the time. Video "hangs up" occasionally & frames are partially displayed or in random rectangular segments.
Sorry for the tardy thank-you note but went to France on vacation the day after getting it back running & used it for final coordination of the trip & had such a great time that when came home I spent a week in the hospital for a pacemaker installation.
