iMAC desktop
I tried to open folders on my desktop today and they were all empty. I used time machine to restore them from March 30. I am a 30 year mac guy and I have never seen anything like this. Could it be a virus?

There are no viruses in the wild that can infect OS X, so it was not a virus. If your backup restored them, that's good. Most folks don't make backups. A plus for you.
