Anyone know what this is, where it came from, or how to get rid of it?

Looks like you're running some kind of dock customisation that's the first place i'd look.

Also check what apps are running at startup: System Preferences - Accounts/Users - Login Items

External hard disk acquisition addict - but admitting the problem is the first step to a robust backup

Could it be part of your wall paper?

I just noticed when I use my hotcorners to show all windows, the checkmark comes together with my mail icon as an open application. I will try to poke around my mail settings, but I haven't changed anything recently, so I hope I find something! Thanks for the suggestions!

Don't know of anything in mail settings to do that I'd definitely say it's some customisation tool you have running
