You should be able to just stick the Install disk in, shut down, hold down "C" and push the power button. That will boot from the disk and you can install. I don't think you'd need a firmware update because the "boot from disk command" is in the BIOS. (I believe.)
That should do the trick. I try to Command+Shift+/ when I can. They're - Their - There | Two - Too - To | You're - Your | MAC - Mac I was on the M-F honor roll for October, 2006.

Do you know the exact specs of the iMac? If you can tell me a bit more I could look it up for you and see if it might need a Firmware upgrade. My 333 iMac that i got used a year ago now had the latest Firmware in it so Panther went right in. My old 233 iMac though needed to be upgraded. I need the Specs.
