spinning ball (freezing?)

After a year with no problems with my MacBook, I have suddenly been hit with lots of spinning-ball situations, leading to lots of wait time, as the computer seems to be playing catch-up with my instructions. It most often occurs when I've hit the scroll arrow. What are the most common causes of this malady?
