How old is the MBP? Have you tried cleaning the optical drive with a cleaner disc?

Hmm, doesn't seem like it's old enough to develop issues reading discs. Might be a case of dirty lens depending on the environment it's used in. Does it fail to read every type of disc or only certain kinds?

it is still under warranty. If cleaning does not improve return to the Apple Store or Genius Bar.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I tried a Disney film and it works fine. The others were home-made discs so maybe that's why they don't work. Thank you.

Do those home made discs work on other computers? Some drives are sensitive to the type of media (color, burn speed) used..
