I have an imac g4 and recently bought tiger off ebay but it is for an imac g5 and is part of the hardware bundle.

When trying it in the imac g4 it states it is not supported; is there any way to get it to work.

Thanks for any help(I don't want to have wasted £50.

Cheers,

if it is a recover disk for a certain computer, then it will not work with any other computer than that one. Unless I am mistaken, then you are out of luck. It is always better to purchase operating systems legitably, that way they aren't cracked, or fake.

It is an original Tiger install cd but it says imac g5 on it; so it must have come bundled with the imac g5; i heard about other operating systems being installed onto unsupporting computers by reburning the image on the cd.

Is this not possible with this to get it working on my imac g4?

I am not sure about that, try it and see if it works, if it doesn't work, then you got your answer there, if it does work awesome.

If you are interested, I have a macmini for sale with tiger on it in another thread in the buy/sell forum.

There is a work-around for adapting Tiger to computers without Firewire. I don't know if something similar can be done for your problem but it's worth a look. Here's the info: "This info from Mac OS X Hints tells you how to modify the installer so that Tiger will install on older models (like the G3 B&W): http://www.macosxhints.com/article....051211074138859."

Does anyone know how I could modify this information to get it working on my imac g4 - any help would be appreciated for a recent switcher to mac.

Thanks for all your help so far,

Nope. If the disc specifically says iMac G5, it will not work in anything else. Sorry. Apple ships recovery discs with their new machines. These discs can only be used in that type of machine, nothing else.

You might as well just spend the $$$$ and buy Tiger.

Sorry for your luck, but you basically are participating in piracy which we don't condone. As others have pointed out, you should probably just go out and purchase a legit copy of the OS and I'd report your eBay seller for selling illegal software.

As an aside what you're asking to do is to circumvent Apple's protections on the disc which is against our forum rules. We do not allow discussion of illegal activity here. Check out the forum rules if you have questions.

I bought the software off ebay as I believed it to be original software(which it is).

The seller on ebay asked what computer i have and i replied, 'imac'. Stupidly forgetting there is 2 generations.

When I got the CD i explained to the seller the mistake and he said he did not offer refunds; so how is that software illegal?

I am not asking how to pirate sotware; as the software is original - i am merely asking for help as to adapt it to the g4 instead of the g5.

Here lies the problem. You asked a legal question and were give legal answers. Basically, it appears that you can not do what you want to with the purchased media. Looks like you only recourse is to purchase a full load of 10.4. Which will load on any system.

You are asking how to bypass a security method on the disk that ties it to a specific system. That my friend is what is illegal.

Secondly this is a system restore disc. I bet you anything that it's still installed on the original system meaning its one license is used. If you install it, then one of the two of you is pirating it since now there are two copies with one license.

I would explain to the seller that either he refunds your money or you will report him to Apple and Ebay for selling pirated software.

Essentially, for the most part, anyone selling an Apple system restore disc without the computer is probably committing piracy and you should avoid that. I would only bid on retail versions of OS X or any OS for that matter.
