MacBook slowdown

The colored spinning wheel is slowing everything down on my MacBook. Restarting helped but did not resolve. Why is this happening? How to correct?

What machine do you have CPU and memory wise. Download "free memory" and use it and see if it will help.

Thanks for replying. I think I resolved the problem by running the Disk Repair facility after having some corruption on the hard drive diagnosed.
