MacBook OS Crash? Circle with Slash

Was watching netflix and suddenly the computer froze. I tried restarting and immediately got the circle with slash in place of the apple logo. I started it up in Safe Mode and got the following errors. "Read Error 0x7" and "Error loading kernel 'mach_kernel' (0x12)"

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry - it wasn't safe mode is was Command + S (whatever that is). I tried to boot in safe mode (holding shift). The apple and spinning gear appears for a while then a blue screen with the mouse cursor appears. Then the screen switching between different shades of blue/grey with the spinning gear on the bottom for a while and nothing else happens but this over and over. I've been staring at it for 10+ minutes.

What happens when you boot the machine with your original install DVD and run Disk Utility, Verify and Repair from the disk?
