Does anyone here know a way to move a Time Machine Backup (TMB) from the Time Capsule (TC) to a local drive?
I've seen instructions for moving from one local disk to another, from a local disk to a TC and from one TC to another TC. What I haven't seen is a way to go from a TMB on a TC to a TMB on a USB drive. My situation is that my TMB is on a TC I'm going to lose access to (moving). Buying another TC is not an option at the moment so I can't transfer to a new TC. Can this be done? |

Please take this with a grain of salt since I have not had time to research this. It may or may not work. You'll need an external drive larger than the Time Machine backup.
1. Open the Time Machine preference pane and turn Time Machine off. 2. Double click the Time machine sparsebundle so it mounts on the desktop. 3. Clone the Time Machine drive to the external using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper Sylvester Roque Former Contributing Editor About This Particular Macintosh No matter what time it is where I am it's early morning somewhere in the world. Let us know the results. Might be good fodder for a blog post. I am pretty sure I have seen a procedure to do something similar. It might have been to put the a backup inside a sparsebundle file.

I mounted the sparse bundle then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the backup onto the external drive. Then I chose the USB drive containing my newly minted Backups.backupdb folder and viola my Mini backed up no problem with all my older backups accessible via the TM interface. Now I have a new problem. I'll start a new thread for that one though. Go figure. Anyway just wanted to report back and say thanks for the help. |
