Delete button/strikethrough

Hi. I am in Pages creating a brochure. When trying to delete a letter or word, the delete button puts a line through the letter and does not delete at all. Can you help?

It's been a while since I used Pages, however, I think instead of deleting you're using the "mark up" feature of strike out. Go into preferences (sorry I don't remember exactly where) and turn that off.
