I have an imac 10.5.6 and since this morning finder keeps crashing and wont allow me to do anything. I was wondering if there is a way for me to backup my data and just restore the whole thing.

You should be running Leopard 10.5.8 not 5.6. Try booting in Safe mode to see if you can run that way. Otherwise, try booting the machine with your Leopard install DVD and use Disk Utility to run Verify and Repair.
