Hi, I have an ibook g3 (clamshell 366mhz indigo) which I bought recently, and I was wondering what would be the best OS for it.
Also, do you think it would be worth upgrading the ram in this? [I've heard they are painfully hard to disassemble]

Mac OS 10.3 would be the most responsive. You could install 10.4...but it might be a bit slow. As far as the ram...not really that hard:

I'm still reeling over the idea that someone would pay money for one of these in 2012 ... if it cost you more than $25, you overpaid. And this is coming from someone who had one and LOVED THEM, but that was a LONG time ago.

I got it for $33, which IMO is a decent price... $8 more than the $25 You suggested, but eh... I still think it was worth the money.

It amazes me how I see some of these being sold on ebay for ~$100 with virtually no upgrades... why people would buy them for that price?

I put OS 10.3 Panther on it, like pigoo3 suggested, and it runs very well,.(So far I haven't any issues)

Just out of curiosity, why would you suggest OS 10.2 Germany_chris?

-- And thanks for the link to iFixit... That helps alot. :D

Congrats on the price...that's awesome!

Yes...some older stuff does sell for a lot on e-Bay...because of:

- auction format (just need two interested people with too much cash)
- nationwide audience (lots & lots of folks looking)
- uninformed users who pay too much, get the item, then realize an old computer can't do much (compared to a new computer)

I put OS 10.3 Panther on it, like pigoo3 suggested, and it runs very well,.(So far I haven't any issues)

Habit really, I didn't like 10.3 all that much and G3's are so limited resource wise that I'd just keep it on 10.2 and OS9. put tenfourfox and classilla on there and play.

I see where you're coming from.

I was considering OS 9; and plan to use that as my main OS eventually, but would like to have OS X on there as well, and seeing as I've misplaced my OS 9 disk, I might as well Install OS X and start using it.

So Far I've Had a good run with 10.3 Panther so far, (TBH, I always preferred to go 10.2 or 10.4 because of past experiences) but I decided to listen to pigoo3 because I happened to have a 10.3 disk laying around. I have a 10.4 disk as well (probably hiding with the OS 9 disk somewhere), though I see no reason in changing seeing as 10.3 seems to be the best balance in compatibility and Speed on my machine.

If I wind up installing more RAM in my iBook however, then I might go up to 10.4

[I'm sorry if some of that was incoherent... I'm not the best at gathering thoughts and writing... er... typing]

As I mentioned above...I suggested OS 10.3 for the best combination of responsiveness & compatibility.

-Responsiveness = better overall speed when doing things (anything)

-Compatibility = possibly a newer version of iTunes, Safari, some OS features, and software titles (titles that are the same vintage as the computer).

With OS 10.2 (being slightly older) you may run into more compatibility problems (not that you won't with OS 10.3 as well).

You could run OS 10.4 (and get even better compatibility & newer OS features)...but you're going to sacrifice responsiveness...and you may need a ram upgrade.

Again...I was suggesting 10.3 to get the best combination of responsiveness & compatibility. Your call.

Exactly. Eventually I'll probably upgrade, but again, It works for me for now, so why change?

Once again, thanks for the help!
