remove specific number of characters from a file

know of any applications or script to remove a specific number of characters from the beginning or end of a filename within finder? is this possible with automator?

there is a script for this in iTunes http://dougscripts.com/itunes/script...p=removenchars

Actually there's a file renaming app that will do this. Well not within Finder. You drag the files into the app's window and run renaming parameters.
